Bombay Celosias
Bombay celosias are a very special variety with really unique flowers. These were bred as a cut flower. One feature helps them stand apart from other crested celosias is they bear a single flower stem per plant. The flower is quite eye catching.
This cockscomb type celosia has very sturdy stems. Instead of the usual crested cockscomb flowers, these have a flat triangular spike with fan shaped to coral-like blossom.
The plants range from slightly over two feet in height up to four feet. They have a spread of twelve to sixteen inches.
Bombay celosia is typically grown as a cut flower because of the very high quality stems. The blooms come in a rich array of colors.
In general, most celosia flower stems have a long vase life. However, Bombay celosias last much longer than the others. As cut flowers, these can be grown in the field and in a greenhouse.
The plants yield 40% more flower stems than most varieties because these can be spaced very close together—five to seven inches apart as a cut flower.
While most celosias prefer full sun, this open pollinated variety will tolerate part shade. Bombay plants have a uniform growth rate and bear round stems. The heat tolerant plants are easy to grow.
These flowers are very refined, and make a great cut flower. This variety is quick to bloom—about three to four weeks than comparable varieties that are grown as cut flowers. Flowering begins about 12 to 13 weeks from the time the seeds are sown.
Bombay Purple celosia was the first cut flower to receive a gold medal.
Bombay Yellow Gold celosia was named a Fleuroselect Gold Medal winner in 1998 because this was a new novel color and the plant is even more uniform than the other Bombay varieties.
There is a wide variety of flower colors available in this variety. Some flower colors are actually tricolored with the shade varying slightly throughout the flower, depending on its location on the bloom.
The Bombay flower colors include dark red, purple, sunshine yellow, yellow gold, cherry, pink, filemon, Bordeaux, fire, orange, and apricot. Flora is a deep gold, while Candy is pinkish-rose. Fisal is salmon toned. Firosa is rose colored, while Fivia is purple rose.
