A Minute to Midnight is the second book in the Atlee Pine thrillers by David Baldacci. Pine is an FBI agent, and has issues regarding her life thirty years prior when her twin sister was abducted and she was bashed in the head and left for dead. Her parents had recently moved to the small town of Andersonville, Georgia and crimes of that nature just didn’t happen there. However, after a hospital stay, Atlee’s parents took her and left in the middle of the night. Later her father committed suicide and her mother disappeared.

Atlee works out of an FBI office in Arizona, and while on the job, she encounters a kidnapper, saves the little girl he kidnapped, and beats him almost to death. Her boss at the FBI suggests that she was out of line, went too far, and needs a vacation, so she takes her friend and co-worker Carol Blum and they travel to Andersonville to try to solve her personal mystery that happened so long ago. While there, she unofficially gets involved in investigating several murders, and teams up with FBI agents she had previously worked with. She and some of the valuable, likeable characters are almost killed while investigating.

Baldacci is one of the best storytellers in modern fiction, and in this novel, he doesn’t disappoint. The story will put readers on the edge from the first chapter and keep them there through to the end. The suspense builds and doesn’t stop; there are several characters that are suspect, and readers won’t find out until the dénouement, and then there are a few unexpected surprises. As is his style, Baldacci develops his characters well. Atlee Pine is a great character, not only likeable, but one whom readers can relate to because of her past and the pain she still feels. Her close friend, Carol, has been an administrative employee of the FBI for almost 40 years, and her knowledge keeps both of them going while trying to solve not only the present murders, but also Atlee’s past mystery and the search for her most-likely dead sister.

This novel is highly recommended. It will keep readers on the edge and begging for more. Baldacci can’t write them fast enough for most.
